Adios, Spain, we have loved you!  This week concludes SOHO’s tour of Spanish wines, and we have enjoyed them immensely.  For our final week, we have chosen three robust reds to feature with Chef Joey’s beautifully creative tapas, and we know that you will love them as much as we do!

This week’s Flight Night begins on Wednesday, April 25th, and the wines and their tapas will be available through May 1st.

First, SOHO will pour a Bodegas Luzon, Altos de Luzon 2012 from Castilla-La Mancha. The winemaker offers,

“Cherry color with an intense garnet background. On the nose powerful and intense. Aromas of ripe fruit (blackberry, plum,…), spices, cocoa hints, vanilla and high roast from new oak barrels. Tasty, amiable and generous on the palate. Chocolate tones, mature tannins, good acidity with silky texture and good balance.”

Next, SOHO will pour a Franco-Espanolas, Rioja Bordon Gran Reserva 2007 from Rioja. The wine is described by the winemaker,

“Vibrant ruby-red color. On the nose itis characterized by overtones of ripe red fruits, subtle toasted aromas, sweet spices and delicate hints of caramel. Excellent texture on the palate, full-flavored, displaying a broad range of nuances and a perfect balance between oak and fruits.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a Alvara Palacios, Camins del Priorat ‘16 from Priorat. Notes on the wine,

“A firm and silky red with lots of bright blue fruits and violet flower character. Medium body. Vivid finish. Excellent entry level Priorat. Drink now.”

SOHO’s Executive Chef Joey Zelinka has created a suggested tapa plate to pair with each of the wines!

Road trip with us to Spain this month! This amazing, lesser known region has a multitude of wines that you’re sure to enjoy. In fact, there are 77 indiginous grape varieties, and 69 unique varieties in Spain! We’re going to bring you 12 of our favorites to try this month, so get ready for your palate to be pleased…

This week’s Flight Night begins on Wednesday, April 4th, and the wines and their tapas will be available through April 10th.

First, SOHO will pour a Rogo Valdeorras Godello 2016 from Valdeorras, Galacia. The winemaker offers,

“Pale gold. Tightly focused lemon and quince aromas are complemented by deeper peach and honey qualities. Lively and sharply focused in the mouth, offering vibrant citrus and orchard fruit flavors and a spicy ginger flourish. Finishes taut, energetic and long, featuring lingering suggestions of bitter citrus rind and pear skin.”

Next, SOHO will pour a El Cantico Crianza 2011 from Rioja. The wine is described by the winemaker,

“Deep red. Smoke-accented red berries, cherry-vanilla and peppery spices on the fragrant nose. Fleshy and gently sweet on the palate, offering lively red fruit and oak spice flavors that deepen on the back half. The clinging nish features even tannins and an echo of fresh raspberry.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a Gran Clos Priorat 2012 from Priorat. Notes on the wine,

“Deep, rich, inky purple. Sublime aromas recall a blend of fresh blueberries and blackberries, kirsch and mineral nuances, mingled with toasty new oak and floral notes. Velvety smooth with fine tannins that are intense and ample with a richly textured structure and pronounced complexity.”

SOHO’s Executive Chef Joey Zelinka has created a suggested tapa plate to pair with each of the wines!

Throughout March, SOHO is spotlighting the wines and flavors of California. While we love the wine of Napa Valley, the rest of the state produces exceptional wines as well, so grab a seat and enjoy the other wine regions of California. Paired with tapas by Chef Joey Zelinka, our flights are sure to please!

This week’s Flight Night begins on Wednesday, March 28 and the wines and their tapas will be available through April 4.

First, SOHO will pour a 2014 Ojai Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara. The winemaker offers,

“Lightly chilled, this 2014 Pinot Noir exhibits a knock out aroma of pretty dried flowers and it goes down with altogether too much ease.”

Next, SOHO will pour a 2015 Klinker Brick Old Vine Zinfandel from Lodi. The wine is described by the winemaker,

“Our Old Vine Zinfandel is a blend of 16 different vineyard blocks of old vine zinfandel vineyards with an average age of 86 years. With berries and spice on the nose, dark, sweet fruit fills the palate with just a hint of black peper. This wine has a long, lingering finish.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a 2015 Justin Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles. Notes on the wine,

“Full bodied with bright black cherry, black currant and berry fruit with an underpinning of oak barrel accents on entry. The mid palate show continued fruit with savory herbal notes, mint and a hint of violet. The finish is clean, long and layered with lingering dark fruits surrounded by soft chewy tannins balanced by crisp acidity and subtle floral notes.”

SOHO’s Executive Chef Joey Zelinka has created a suggested tapa plate to pair with each of the wines!

This week’s Flight Night begins on Wednesday, March 21 and the wines and their tapas will be available through March 28.

First, SOHO will pour a 2015 Stoplman Viognier from Ballard Canyon. The tasting notes for the wine,

“Classic Viognier notes of white peach and apricot backed with crushed stone. Hints of orange blossom denote a lively, acidic backbone. The time in the barrel gives a nice roundness and approachability for early drinking.”

Next, SOHO will pour a 2014 Ojai Syrah from Santa Barbara. The wine is described,

“Possessing lots of cool climate characteristics in its peppery, blackberry, violets and mineral-laced aromas and flavors, the 2014 Syrah Santa Barbara is fresh, elegant and medium-bodied on the palate, with nicely integrated acidity and fine tannin. it’s a classy, easy-drinking Syrah that has real character.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a 2015 Austin Hope Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles. The winemaker says,

“Deep ruby in color the 2015 Austin Hope Cabernet Sauvignon expresses intense fragrances of black currants, ripe black cherries and blackberries with subtle notes of violets, mocha and dried spices. It’s a big, powerful, modern-styled wine with velvety tannins and heaps of juicy blackberry and cherry fruit, while nuances of cedar, clove and vanilla bean round out the long, smooth finish.”

First, SOHO will pour a 2013 Steele “Block N” Pinot Noir from Bien Nacido Vineyard in Santa Barbara. The winemaker notes,

“This vineyard, given its coastal influence, produces a wine with freshly picked strawberry, bing cherries, cloves and spice, aromas and flavors. But still has a balance of acidity and a finish that lingers of sweet tobacco and spices.

Next, SOHO will pour a 2013 Meyer Family Cellars Syrah from Yorkville Highlands. The wine is described,

“bursts with a ripe mixture of huckleberry, blueberry, and plum. Behind the fruit a savory backdrop mingles with violet, pepper, and wet earth. Two years in a barrel has softened the palate and added aromas of vanilla, cedar and clove.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a 2015 Halter Ranch “Synthesis” from Paso Robles. The winemaker offers the following tasting notes:

“A perennial favorite at Halter Ranch, Synthesis is our Cabernet Sauvignon based blend that continues to over deliver in deliciosity. Both red and black fruits and cassis dominate the nose, followed by flavors of black cherry and plums. Smooth and approachable, this wine is great on its own, but also pairs with virtually everything.”

This week’s Flight Night begins on Wednesday, March 7, and the wines and their tapas will be available through March 13.

Grapes

 

First, SOHO will pour a Lieu Dit Sauvignon Blanc 2016 from Santa Ynez Valley. The wine is described,

“The 2016 Sauvignon Blanc is absolutely gorgeous. Melon, pear, fig and sage are all beautifully delineated in the glass.”

Next, SOHO will pour a Smith & Hook Red Blend 2014 from the Central Coast. The wine’s tasting notes,

“Opulent aromas of blackberry and cherry, accompanied by vanilla and toasted oak. The refined yet robust palate is full bodied, lush and structured with layers of black fruit and toasted oak.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a Mettler Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 from Lodi. The winemaker says,

“It opens with inviting aromas of dark cherry, cola, cedar, mineral and earth. The graceful mingling of cherry, cranberry and sweet oak flavors have a freshness of character and a whisper of vanilla. On the palate, the rich mouthfeel is moderated by juicy acidity, and the long finish is reminiscent of a fine Bordeaux.”

As February draws to a close, we are finishing our tour of Italian wines and flavors.  So stop by soon and enjoy fabulous wines paired with Chef Joey’s delicious tapas.

This week’s Flight Night begins on Wednesday February 28th and the wines and their tapas will be available through March 6. Buon appetito!

First, SOHO will pour a Pieropan Soave Classico 2016 from Soave Classico, Veneto, and shares the following tasting notes,

“Brilliant yellow straw in hue with a greenish tint, the wine opens with nuanced aromas reminiscent of almond blossoms, marzipan, white peach and honeysuckle. On the juicy palate, crisp acidity frames flavors of toasted nuts, lemon zest, pomme fruits and apricot. Exceptionally balanced, the wine concludes with a lingering finish that offers both length and concentration, wrapping up with delicious notes of honeycomb and marzipan, energetic minerality, and a creamy lift.”

Next, SOHO will pour a G.D. Vajra Nebiolo Lange 2015 from Lange, Piedmont. The wine is described as,

“Ruby bright red and delicate color. Intense notes of violet and Fanee rose, accompanied by the freshness of small red fruits. Silky tannins cover the palate with personality and energy.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a Piccini Brunello di Montalcino 2012 from Montalcino, Tuscany. The winemaker notes,

“This wine plays its cards close to its chest and reveals aromas of wild berry, cherry cola, grilled herb and toasted almond. The bouquet is not too intense. The wine is refine in large oak casks for two years. The quality of the tannins is not totally smooth, but this is a common trait in Brunellos from this vintage.”

In the depths of dreary February in Atlanta, we’re happily still reveling in our favorite wines from Italy! You’ve got to focus on something good, right?  And we have plenty of good for you to enjoy this week, all you need to do is stop by, sit a spell, and enjoy the wines we’ve picked for you, paired with their yummo tapas that Chef created!

This week’s Flight Night begins on Wednseday February 21st, and the wines and their tapas will be available through February 27th. Buon appetito!

First, SOHO will pour a Tenuta Di Arceno Chianti Classico Riserva 2014 from Asti, Piedmont, and offers the following tasting notes,

“..The nose is expressive dominated by crushed lavender and roses with earthy tones of cypress. The firm tannin structure is driven by powerful and rich fruit favors of black cherry, ripe -gs and tart currants. Bright acidity carries the -nish of white pepper, lime stone minerality and orange peel.”

Next, SOHO will pour a Allegrini Palazzo della Torre IGT 2012 from Veronese. The wine is described as,

“The vineyard surrounds Villa della Torre, a splendid masterpiece of Renaissance architecture now owned by the family, and produces a full-bodied red wine that has an ageing potential of at least ten years. The blend is the historic combination of Corvina and Rondinella with the addition of a small quantity of Sangiovese.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a Donna Olimpia 1898, Bolgheri 2013 from Bolgheri.  The winemaker says,

“Ruby red, very deep colour with purple hues. On the nose, ample and clean, with vibrant notes of cinnamon, blackberry, blueberry, pepperoni, chocolate and liquorice. It is well-structured, soft and very harmonious. Sweet tannins and lingering jammy fruits round up the finish.”

Italy.  What can we say? We love it! The food, the wine, the people; all of it.  Especially the wine though, because let’s be serious, a month is not nearly enough time to explore all the amazing wine regions and what they have to offer.  You know we’re trying to bring you as many of our favorites as possible, right?

This week is a fun one, and we hope you’ll join us for our wine and tapas pairings that are going to make you swoon with happiness! This week’s Flight Night begins on Thursday February 15, and the wines and their tapas will be available through February 20th. Buon appetito!

First, SOHO will pour a Pico Maccario Tre Roveri Barbera D’Asti 2015 from Asti, Piedmont, and offers the following tasting notes,

“Tre Roveri shows an intensity, depth and level of complexity that can only be achieved with old vines. Ripe red cherry fruit is accented with layers of wild herbs, leather and truffle. Wood aging lends flavors of cedar, sweet spices and tobacco. Moderate weight and gentle tannins make Tre Roveri a versatile wine for the table.”

Next, SOHO will pour a Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Rosso 2016 from Etna, Sicily. The wine is described as,

“Color: ruby red. Nose: ripe fruits and sweet spices. Flavor: fresh, fine balanced and rich,very elegant .”

Finally, SOHO will pour a Tua Rita Rosso dei Notri Toscana 2015 from Tuscany.  The winemaker says,

“Deep ruby red in color, with aromas of black fruits, namely blackberries, plums and ripe black cherries over more subtle notes of cocoa, licorice and sweet spice. On the palate, the wine is smooth, with silky tannins and bracing acidity, showing structural balance long into the finish.”

Is there really anything better than the wines and cuisine of Italy? Italy is home to some of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world, and is the world’s largest wine producer by volume.  Italian wines are known worldwide for their broad variety, and come from an impressive 20 regions!

SOHO is particularly fond of these wines, as the owners, Frank and Susan Smith regularly vacation in Italy, enjoying everything the country has to offer.  Come enjoy our favorite varietals as we introduce them week by week, and get the closest experience possible without leaving Atlanta!

This week’s Flight Night begins on Wednesday February 7, and the wines and their tapas will be available through February 13th.

First, SOHO will pour a Borgogno Dolcetto d’Alba 2015 from Alba, Piedmont, and offers the following tasting notes,

“Intense ruby red color almost purple. Vinous, fresh and fruity in the nose, very pleasant fragrance. Dry and fragrant flavor with notes of almond.”

Next, SOHO will pour a Bertani Volpolicella Ripasso 2014 from Valpolicella. The wine is described as,

“It has an intense purple-red colour with purplish highlights. On the nose it has a very clean and intense aroma of ripe red fruit with hints of dark fruit, such as bramble, blackcurrant and ripe cherry. It is velvety and well-balanced, full and round while maintaining a lively and intense grip, with a sapid aftertaste.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a Tenuta Sette Ponti Crognolo Toscana 2015 from Tuscany.  The winemaker says,

“Intense ruby in color, the wine has a fruity, spicy bouquet and ripe cherry and berries on the palate. It has the vivid acidity typical of Sangiovese, with well integrated tannins and an earthy finish.”

SOHO’s Executive Chef Joey Zalinka has created a suggested tapa plate to pair with each of the wines!

Borgogno Dolcetto d’Alba 2015
100% Dolcetto
Paired with: Dolcetto BBQ Chicken Skewersi

Bertani Volpolicella Ripasso 2014
85% Corvina Veronese, 10% Merlot, 5% Rondinella
Paired with: Grilled Prime Sirloin, Mushroom Risotto, Ripasso Reduction

Tenuta Sette Ponti Crognolo Toscana 2015
90% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot
Paired with: Tagliatelle Pasta, Braised Short Rib, Roasted Pearl Onion
