First, SOHO will pour a Mi Terruño Limited Reserve Malbec/Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 from Mendoza, AR.  The winemaker offers,

“Colour : Deep ruby red with intense violet hues and dark shades.  Aromas : Delightful complexity of ripe plums, dry fruits and dark raspberry combined with aromas and flavors of spiced plum, dark berries, mocha and herbs. Palate : Soft and velvety tannins, smooth and robust structure. The nutty oak element gives the finish a dry edge.”

Next, SOHO will pour a Finca Decero Malbec 2016 from Agrelo, Mendoza, AR. The wine is described by the winemaker,

“2016 Decero Malbec continues with the style that characterizes our Remolinos Vineyard, displaying intense violet aromas over a core of red fruits with notes of cherries and raspberries. A medium-bodied, very well balanced wine with fresh acidity, it shows supple and elegant tannins that benefit from 14 months maturation in French oak barrel.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a Bodega Catena Zapata Chardonnay 2016 from Mendoza, Argentina. Notes on the wine,

“Citrus and peach fruit flavors. Stone fruit aromas and a rich texture. Lively floral notes, strong mineral character and cool climate bright acidity.”

SOHO’s Executive Chef Joey Zelinka has created a suggested tapa plate to pair with each of the wines!

First, SOHO will pour a Cuvelier Los Andes Rose 2018 from Uco Valley, Mendoza.  The winemaker offers,

“Appearance: beautiful pale salmon color with pink hues. Very attractive. Aroma: intense with notes of citrus, flowers and fresh fruit such as apricots. Mouth: fresh, juicy, crisp and easy to drink. Very good.”

Next, SOHO will pour a Montes Twins Red Blend 2016 from Colchagua Valley, Chile. The wine is described by the winemaker,

“It is a perfumed wine, with elegant aromas of ripe black fruit recalling fig and blackcurrant, typical of the Cabernet Sauvignon from this area. The Syrah makes its presence felt with delicate aromas of sweet spices and leather that heighten the character. Fresh and juicy on the palate, due in no small part to the percentage of Tempranillo in the blend. The Carmenère lends smooth, round tannins for a light sweet sensation that lingers on its pleasing finish.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a Odfjell Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 from Cauquenes, Maule Valley. Notes on the wine,

“Bright ruby red in color with pleasing aromas of black fruits such as blueberries, plums, and cherries as well as licorice. Velvety and persistent on the palate with a long, lingering finish.”

First, SOHO will pour a Alcance Carmenere Reserve 2016 from Maule Valley, Chile.  The winemaker offers,

“The 2016 Alcance Carmenere is expressive and vibrant. Dark berries, fresh spices and delicate notes of cedar on the nose are followed by a concentrated, long finish on the palate. These rich flavors all come together seamlessly in a beautiful, complex wine that pairs well with any occasion.

Next, SOHO will pour a Lapostolle Merlot 2015  from Rapel Valley, Chile. The wine is described by the winemaker,

First, SOHO will pour a Mapuche Sauvignon Blanc 2018 from Central Valley, Chile.  The winemaker offers,

“Pablo Morandé is one of the fathers of wine-making in Chile. His influence has transformed the plantings in the Maipo Valley to be revered and respected around the world. Pablo is rooted in the history of Chilean wine production: being one of the leaders of the team making wines at Concha y Toro, a very well-known Chilean vineyard, and responsible for the release of the critically acclaimed Concha y Toro Melchor (a wine may credit as the benchmark release for Chilean wines around the world).

Next, SOHO will pour a Felino Malbec 2014 from Mendoza, Argentina. The wine is described by the winemaker,

“Violet red with black tones. An attractive nose with aromas of fresh black fruits and prunes. The palate displays good concentration and balance, with sweet yet supple tannins.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a Cuvelier Los Andes Blend Coleccion Valle de Uco 2013 from Valle de Uco, Mendoza, Argentina. Notes on the wine,

“The nose is a powerful combination of dark plums, espresso coffee, Belgian chocolate and shy hints of red cherries with a full-bodied palate and abundant, fine-grained tannins, moderate acidity and good length, no doubt lifted by the alcohol. This is a big, ripe blend, slightly international, in need of some bottle aging.”

To say that we enjoy South American wines is an understatement!  While you’ll find all the usual suspects (Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc etc…) in South America, there are a handful of lesser known varieties that have taken on a uniquely South American identity. You’ve got the familiars (like Malbec), and others are only now making a name for themselves outside of the Southern Hemisphere.  We aim to bring you as many as you can possibly enjoy!

This week’s Flight Night begins on Wednesday June 28th, and the wines and their tapas will be available through July 3rd.

BRLASFall2014-MERENLENDER-LaPostolleinAutumn-750p

First, SOHO will pour a 2014 Alcance Cabernet from Maule, Chile and offers the following tasting notes,

“The 2014 Alcance Cabernet is a true reflection of the two appellations from which it hails: the freshness imparted from the Maule grapes harmonizes beautifully with the superb structure of the Maipo fruit. This is a deep, intense, complex wine with aromas of maraschino cherries and cassis. The bright, vivacious palate explodes with fruit over powerful yet refined tannins.”

Next, SOHO will pour a 2014 Bodega Catena Zapata San Carlos Cabernet Franc from Mendoza, Argentina The wine is described as,

“The Catena Cabernet Franc Appellation El Cepillo presents a purple color with red ruby tones. The nose offers elegant aromas of spices, and fresh herbs as thyme and rosemary, red berries, cassis and raspberries, with layers of cedar. The mouthfeel is full and rich with cassis, raspberries flavors and notes of black pepper and oregano . The finish is bright and fresh with finely grained tannins.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a 2013 Piatelli Grand Reserve Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina. The winemaker says,

“Rich flavors of ripe plum, cherry and dark currant with notes of mocha. Velvet finish filled with hints of dark chocolate.”

South America is famous for Malbec, but they do so much more than just that!  Chile is a major player with a tremendous number of wineries that offer beautiful and complex wines to enjoy.

The location of Chile’s major wine region and capital are typical of a cool climate. The valleys along the coast collect cool air as it travels up the Andes. Chile produces peppery and earthy Cabernet Sauvignon in a style very similar to Bordeaux.  Enjoy our perfectly paired wine and tapa features this week!

This week’s Flight Night begins on Wednesday June 7th, and the wines and their tapas will be available through June 13th.
