While many think of February as the month of hearts and love, is there a better way to celebrate than with the love of wine?  We don’t think so!  Our love of wine is highlighted this month with one of our very favorite regions: Italy!  Our Italian love affair shows in this month’s wines and tapas, and we hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

This week’s Flight Night begins on Wednesday February 1st, and the wines and their tapas will be available through February 7th.

First, SOHO will pour a 2015 G. D. Vajra Dolcetto D’Alba from Piedmont, Italy, and offers the following tasting notes,

“Brilliant purple color. Small red fruits, sour cherry, violet and hay: an aromatic range that reminds of summer walks in the mountains… and exciting vinosity that reigns in the cellar in September.  Soft, open in the mouth and balanced, it has delicate tannins accompanied by fresh acidity.”

Next, SOHO will pour a 2013 DiGiovanna Siciliani Rosso from Sicily.  The wine is described as,

“Deep red in color with shades of violet. Plush nose, black cherry and blueberries, a hint of bitter chocolate and impressive palate for this great food wine.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a 2012 Mazzei Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo from Chianti Classico, Italy.  The winemaker says,

“Bright acid structure providing a lively quality. Cranberry, raspberry and red cherry dominate with hints of leather, cedar and cocoa powder. Some earthiness in the finish and ripe soft tannins.”

SOHO’s Executive Chef, Jeff Sigler, has created a suggested tapa plate to pair with each of the wines!

First, SOHO will pour a 2015 Patricia Green Estate Pinot Noir, from Willamette Valley, and offers the following tasting notes,

Next, SOHO will pour a 2014 Belle Glos Clark & Telephone Pinot Noir from Santa Maria Valley.  The wine is described as,

“Deep scarlet-red with lush aromas of blackberry bramble, nutmeg and a hint of caramel. The wine is fresh and exuberant in the mouth with sumptuous strawberry jam, ripe black cherry, cranberry and warm gingerbread. Perfectly balanced with refreshing acidity, this wine delivers velvety tannins and a hint of toffee that carries through its long finish.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a 2014 Luli Pinot Noir from Santa Lucia Highlands.  The winemaker says,

“The 2014 Luli Pinot Noir is bright and pure, with predominately red fruits and spice. Pomegranate, bing cherry, raspberry and earl grey tea evolve from the wine.  The palate is broad and structured with climate regions as the Santa Lucia Highlands.”

It’s finally cold in Atlanta, (just in time for Christmas) and many of us are drinking delicious reds, eating richer dishes, and generally enjoying the beauty of the season.  This is an amazing time at SOHO, as we get to reflect on our wonderful year, and begin to make new plans for wine and cuisine in 2017.

As we roll through December, we bring back the most popular wines of the year to make their final showing!  This week’s Flight Night begins on Wednesday December 21st, and the wines and their tapas will be available through December 27th.

First, SOHO will pour a 2010 L’ Arco Rosso del Veronese, from Rosso del Veronese IGT, and offers the following tasting notes,

“This medium bodied red is laced with dark cherries, tobacco and a hint of lavender supported by gripping tannins and a lengthy finish.”

Next, SOHO will pour a 2007 Bodegas Palacio Especial Reserva from Rioja, Spain.  The wine is described as,

“Color: Deep ruby red. Aroma: Complex combination of ripe fruit and well integrated oak. Taste: Rich and smooth with great length and finesse.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a 2013 Trig Point Diamond Dust Merlot from Alexander Valley.  The winemaker says,

“The Diamond Dust Vineyard, located just north of Healdsburg, produces marvelously rich and supple Merlot. The micro climate is of critical importance. Summer mornings are usually foggy and very cool but warm sunshine follows and mid-90’s temperatures are common in the afternoons. Most evenings the fog rolls in again and the vineyards cool down to the mid-40s.”

SOHO’s Executive Chef, Jeff Sigler, has created a suggested tapa plate to pair with each of the wines!

2010 L’ Arco Rosso del Veronese
50% Corvina and Corvinone, 30% Rondinella, 15% Sangiovese, 5% Molinara
Paired with: Manchego Stuffed Medjool Dates, Grapes, Honey & Herbs

2007 Bodegas Palacio Especial Reserva
100% Tempranillo
Paired with: Bresaola Carpaccio, Shaved Parmesan, Capers, Shallots, Creamy Dijon

2013 Trig Point Diamond Dust Merlot
100% Merlot
Paired with: Spanish Chorizo & Chocolate on Toast

Sample each wine in a flight (three three-ounce glasses) for $14.25. Or, pair the flight with a tapa plate for $19. Try a full glass of wine and tapa plate for $13. Of course, the wines and tapas are available individually as well ($9.50/glass and $6.50/tapas).

One of our favorite quotes is actually a line out of the movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith: in which Brad Pitt states, “Sometimes in the end, you start thinking about the beginning.” This true for our December reflections, and of SOHO’s Flight Nights this month!

In December, we bring back the most popular wines of the year to make their final showing, and we begin to look forward to what 2017 will bring us!  This week’s Flight Night begins on Wednesday December 14th, and the wines and their tapas will be available through December 20th.

First, SOHO will pour a 2013 Waterbrook Reserve Malbec, from Columbia Valley, and offers the following tasting notes,

“The wine offers aromas and flavors of blackberry cobbler and boysenberry preserves. Elegant tannins and a lingering finish of chocolate and sweet oak make this a very approachable wine.”

Next, SOHO will pour a 2014 Le Volte Dell ’Ornellaia from Bolgheri.  The wine is described as,

“The late ripening of the grapes have made it possible to express the crispness and freshness of the fruit to best effect. What is striking is the high quality of the tannins on the palate: silky, refined and without any sharp edges, albeit with a lower density than in hotter vintages. Le Volte dell’Ornellaia is a balanced, harmonious and very drinkable wine thanks in particular to the beautiful Merlots of 2014.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a 2013 Justin Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles.  The winemaker says,

“Classic Cabernet flavors with moderate plus blackcurrant, cherry fruit and baking spice flavors on the entry. Sweet tobacco and savory herbal notes arrive on the mid-palate, along with beautifully balanced tannins that provide a structure that supports the wine through its perfectly balanced, clean finish.”

SOHO’s Executive Chef, Jeff Sigler, has created a suggested tapa plate to pair with each of the wines!

2013 Waterbrook Reserve Malbac
100% Malbac

Paired with: Seared Duck Breast, Carrot Escabeche, Carrot Puree

2013 Justin Cabernet Sauvignon
100% Cabernet
Paired with: Short Rib Stuffed Piquillo Peppers, Cilantro, Peanuts

This is a finesse styled Beaux Freres. Medium bodied with light-sweet tannins, very good purity and depth.  The texture here is beguiling as well.”

Next, SOHO will pour a 2013 Cloisonne Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley.  The wine is described as,

“A complex wine with layers of deep black fruits. Deep aromas of black cherry, cassis, black tea, cedar, cigar box, and cocoa. Long finish with baking spices on the palate. Gripping tannins that add structure and weight to this special wine. Aged for 27 months using 100% French oak to create a masterpiece.”
