First, SOHO will pour a 2013 Custard Chardonnay. The winemaker offers the following tasting notes: “Our beautifully crafted 2013 Custard Chardonnay is rich, creamy and voluptuous on the nose featuring aromas of lemon crème brulee and graham cracker crust along with toasty almond and vanilla notes from French oak aging. This wine is marked by crisp tropical fruit. It is distinctively complex with a subtle combination of vanilla, cream and warm citrus fruit notes.”

Next, SOHO will pour a 2013 Garnet Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. The winemaker describes creating the wine, as well as the taste, “2013 was a special year for the Sonoma Coast appellation as the mild growing season and dry summer and fall kept rains away until well after the fruit was picked. The mild fall weather meant that Sonoma Coast experienced a “classic” vintage. The grapes were hand-picked at night and early morning to retain freshness and acidity…Oak aging, with French oak and a touch of American for vanilla and spice notes, contributed body, finesse and well-balanced character.”

Finally, will pour a 2012 Angels & Cowboys Proprietary Red. The winemaker says of the wine, “Richly concentrated, juicy and dense with woodland berries, ripe dark cherry, bergamot and fig, handsomely accentuated by nuances of warm spice and molten dark chocolate. Supple and beautifully complex with stunning depth creating perfect harmony between both texture and flavor all the while offering a lengthy, generous, decadent finish.”

SOHO’s executive chef, Scott Warren, and sous chef, Chris Lyons, have created a tapas plate to pair with each wine.

First, SOHO will pour a 2011 Domaine Drouhin Chardonnay from Dundee Hills, Oregon. The winemakers says of the Chardonnay: “Like 2010, the 2011 vintage is very good for Chardonnay. The cool growing year and later harvest gave us excellent flavors and acidity. On the nose, there are beautiful white flowers, some citric fruits, and the sense of minerality.

Next, SOHO will pour a 2011 Kings Ridge Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley. The Pinot Noir is described by the winemakers: “A touch of cinnamon and smoke lead in this compellingly vinous red, with red cherry flavors and an earthy savor in the tannins. It feels dry, structured and elegant.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a 2010 Chehalem 3 Vineyards Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley. The winemaker says of the wine: “A classic red-fruited Pinot Noir with dark, earthy, savory elements, characteristically cracked pepper, tea leaf, cinnamon, charcoal, matchstick, spice and plum. The acidity of the vintage gives a structure to suspend wood and tannin elements playfully on the palate. ”

SOHO’s executive chef, Joe Ahn, has created three tapas plates to pair with each Oregon wine.

An Artful Evening

We had the pleasure of hosting Mimi Casteel of Bethel Heights and Mark Vlossak of St. Innocent Winery this past Wednesday at SOHO as part of the High Museum Wine Auction week.  Executive Chef Joe Ahn created a beautiful tasting menu and each course was paired with wine from both wineries.  The result was pure art.

Miss Mimi Casteel presented wines that matched her elegance, and the wines from Mark Vlossak were as charismatic as he.  Her Estate Chardonnay and Riesling met his Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, and together with their Pinot Noirs, they proudly showcased the extraordinary wines of Willamette Valley. They shared their extensive knowledge and love of winemaking, and we all came to appreciate the art of their craftsmanship.

Chef Joe Ahn wooed diners with his deft ability to pair beautifully prepared dishes in a way that graciously showcased the wine.  He succeeded from the first course of Butter Poached Georgia White Shrimp.  The most perfectly prepared Smoked Wild King Salmon with Avocado Sauce followed, and by the time we tasted the third and fourth courses of Baby Rack of Lamb and Duck Confit designed to showcase the pinot noirs, even the vintners were dazzled by his artful presentation.

I once read a review where graceful servers were compared to butterflies, in that you’re usually happy to see them and they never impede, and I was thrilled to host an event where our staff excelled in the art of service.

Finally, the reason we were all gathered was to celebrate the High Museum of Art, known for its “steadily expanding permanent collection and innovative, exhibitions and programs.”  My husband, Frank, reminded everyone of something I said when we first met 15 years ago: Unless you support the arts, you have no right to criticize the arts.  It’s been a joy to watch the High Museum grow since I first arrived in Atlanta in the 1980’s.

This past Wednesday, it was a joy to support the arts and experience an artful evening.
