Happy new year!  Cheers to new beginnings and a prosperous and healthy 2017!  For the very first Flight Night of this new year, we celebrate delicious red varietals, specifically Pinot Noirs!   This week’s Flight Night begins on Wednesday January 4th, and the wines and their tapas will be available through January 10th.

First, SOHO will pour a 2015 Patricia Green Estate Pinot Noir, from Willamette Valley, and offers the following tasting notes,

“This wine has incredible pure, fruit driven and penetrating aromatics. The fruit is sweet in nature but savory in character and underlayed by a pure beam of acidity that keeps the wine in balance.”

Next, SOHO will pour a 2014 Belle Glos Clark & Telephone Pinot Noir from Santa Maria Valley.  The wine is described as,

“Deep scarlet-red with lush aromas of blackberry bramble, nutmeg and a hint of caramel. The wine is fresh and exuberant in the mouth with sumptuous strawberry jam, ripe black cherry, cranberry and warm gingerbread. Perfectly balanced with refreshing acidity, this wine delivers velvety tannins and a hint of toffee that carries through its long finish.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a 2014 Luli Pinot Noir from Santa Lucia Highlands.  The winemaker says,

“The 2014 Luli Pinot Noir is bright and pure, with predominately red fruits and spice. Pomegranate, bing cherry, raspberry and earl grey tea evolve from the wine.  The palate is broad and structured with climate regions as the Santa Lucia Highlands.”

SOHO’s Executive Chef, Jeff Sigler, has created a suggested tapa plate to pair with each of the wines!

2015 Patricia Green Estate Pinot Noir
100% Pinot Noir
Paired with: Miso and Sake Marinated Scottish Salmon, Grilled Scallion, Pickled Ginger, Dashi

2014 Belle Glos Clark & Telephone Pinot Noir

Paired with: Grilled Organic King Trumpet Mushroom, Local Grits, Poached Egg, Mushroom Broth

2014 Luli Pinot Noir
100% Pinot Noir
Paired with: Tagliatelle Pasta with Short Rib, Cipollini Onions, Red Wine Sauce

Sample each wine in a flight (three three-ounce glasses) for $14.25. Or, pair the flight with a tapa plate for $19. Try a full glass of wine and tapa plate for $13. Of course, the wines and tapas are available individually as well ($9.50/glass and $6.50/tapas).

Come celebrate an amazing 2017 with us!

Throughout the month of January, SOHO Atlanta restaurant will showcase red varietals from around the world. The tour begins on flight night, Wednesday, January 8, with Pinot Noir. The wine and tapas introduced Wednesday will be available through Tuesday, January 14.

First, SOHO will pour a 2011 Domaine Henri Bourgeois “Petit Clos” Pinot Noir from Marlborough, New Zealand. The winemaker says of the Pinot, “The vines are young and vibrant…Aged for 11 months in French oak barrels, the 2011 vintage has lovely aromas of cranberries and red cherries with hints of tar. Wonderfully balanced, the Petit Clos is supple and offers a tasty, elegant, even earthy finish.”

Next, SOHO will pour a 2011 Davis Bynum “Jane’s Vineyard” Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley, California. The winemaker describes the wine, “Jane’s Vineyard shows superior vine balance thanks to its well-drained, shallow and inherently low vigor soils…Ichoose a selection of Pinot “clones” to enhance complexity: a little lighter, without being lean; a little crisper, without being tart; a little more fruit driven, without being distracting; with a round, soft mouthfeel.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a 2011 “Carpe Diem” Pinot Noir from Anderson Valley, California. The winemaker says: “The Carpe Diem has ripe aromas and is very jammy, but with limited oak expressions. Acidity levels show off the Anderson Valley climate. Grapes for the Carpe Diem Pinot Noir are selected exclusively from the best vineyards in Northern California’s cool Anderson Valley. This fog-shrouded region not far from Mendocino Coast and the Pacific Ocean provides ideal growing conditions for these delicate grapes.”

SOHO’s executive chef, Joe Ahn, has prepared three tapas plates to pair with each Pinot Noir.

2011 Davis Bynum “Jane’s Vineyard” Pinot Noir
Paired with: Parsnip and pancetta risotto

2011 “Carpe Diem” Pinot Noir
Paired with: Herb-roasted Springer Mountain chicken stuffed with sun-dried cherry dressing

Sample each wine in a flight (three three-ounce glasses) for $13.50. Or, pair the flight with a tapas plate for $18. Try a full glass of wine and tapas plate for $12. Of course, the wines and tapas are available individually as well ($9/glass and $6/tapas). See you soon!

We had the pleasure of hosting Mimi Casteel of Bethel Heights and Mark Vlossak of St. Innocent Winery this past Wednesday at SOHO as part of the High Museum Wine Auction week.  Executive Chef Joe Ahn created a beautiful tasting menu and each course was paired with wine from both wineries.  The result was pure art.

Miss Mimi Casteel presented wines that matched her elegance, and the wines from Mark Vlossak were as charismatic as he.  Her Estate Chardonnay and Riesling met his Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, and together with their Pinot Noirs, they proudly showcased the extraordinary wines of Willamette Valley. They shared their extensive knowledge and love of winemaking, and we all came to appreciate the art of their craftsmanship.

Chef Joe Ahn wooed diners with his deft ability to pair beautifully prepared dishes in a way that graciously showcased the wine.  He succeeded from the first course of Butter Poached Georgia White Shrimp.  The most perfectly prepared Smoked Wild King Salmon with Avocado Sauce followed, and by the time we tasted the third and fourth courses of Baby Rack of Lamb and Duck Confit designed to showcase the pinot noirs, even the vintners were dazzled by his artful presentation.

I once read a review where graceful servers were compared to butterflies, in that you’re usually happy to see them and they never impede, and I was thrilled to host an event where our staff excelled in the art of service.

Finally, the reason we were all gathered was to celebrate the High Museum of Art, known for its “steadily expanding permanent collection and innovative, exhibitions and programs.”  My husband, Frank, reminded everyone of something I said when we first met 15 years ago: Unless you support the arts, you have no right to criticize the arts.  It’s been a joy to watch the High Museum grow since I first arrived in Atlanta in the 1980’s.

This past Wednesday, it was a joy to support the arts and experience an artful evening.

This week SOHO will feature Pinot Noir on flight night, Wednesday, June 23.

First, SOHO will pour a 2007 Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Bourgogne Rouge from Burgundy, France. The Mongeard-Mugenert family has been producing wine in Burgundy since the 18th century. Knowing the land well allows the family to produce exceptional Pinot Noir according to SOHO’s wine expert Lars Snavely.

Next, SOHO will pour a 2008 Erath Pinot Noir from Oregon. Erath winery’s founder, Dick Erath, an engineer turned viticulturist, was one of four pioneers of the modern winemaking era in Oregon. His winery, now owned by Chateau St. Michelle Estates, continues to produce wonderful Pinots. The 2008 Erath Pinot Noir features flavors of cherry pie, red currant and vanilla coffee.

Finally, SOHO will pour a 2009 Escarpment Over the Edge Pinot Noir from Martinborough, New Zealand. This vintage was harvested early due to a very warm growing season and the resulting wine features ripe cherry and plum flavors.

Chef Joe has created three new tapas plates to pair with each Pinot Noir. The following will be available until Wednesday, June 30.
