First, SOHO will pour a 2011 Casa Vinicola Bruno Giacosa Barbera d’Alba from Piedmont, Italy. Says the winemaker of the Barbera d’Alba, “[The wine offers] intense ruby red color with violet reflections. Intense bouquet recalling sour cherry and spices. Lively, generous, and full flavor.”

Next, SOHO will pour a 2010 Volpaia Chianti Classico DOCG from Tuscany, Italy. Says International Wine Cellar of the wine, “Very intense purple-ruby color. Plum, blackcurrant and inky herbs on the nose. Suave and dense on the palate, with juicy flavors of small black forest berries offering excellent clarity and cut. The long finish shows a beautiful mouth-watering quality, with harmonious acids that really extend the flavor.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a 2011 Speri Valpolicella Ripasso DOC from Veneto, Italy. Of the wine, the winemakers note, “This is a young, immediate red which retains the essence of the earth from which it was cultivated. It is characterized by fragrant scents and fresh flavors.”

SOHO’s executive chef, Scott Warren, has created three tapas dishes to pair with each Italian wine.

Flight night at SOHO Restaurant on Wednesday, April 3, features the wines and flavors of California.

First, SOHO will pour a 2010 Talley Arroyo Grande Chardonnay from the Arroyo Grande Valley. The winemaker says of the wine: “Tropical fresh fruit aromas and a hint of buttered biscuit set the stage for a rich and complex palate to follow. Flavors of white peach and Meyer lemon are balanced by a chalky minerality and supple texture. Flavors of vanilla and toast linger with the creamy finish.”

Next, SOHO will pour a 2010 Santa Barbara Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir. The winemaker says the wine is: “Burgundian in color; not over-extracted; (with) strawberry-cinnamon scents with herbs and spices, it has wonderful freshness and persistence on the palate. Bright and lively with nice structure, silky texture, and balanced tannins.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a 2011 Easton Wines Zinfandel from Amador county. According to the winemaker, “the finished wine has full black cherry and blackberry fruit aromas with a beautiful balance and a big, sumptuous, and juicy mouth feel. It also presents complex spicy aromas, with a nice creamy texture derived from the 10 months time it receives in French oak barrels. ”

Each California wine will be paired with a tapas plate created by Executive Chef Joe Ahn.

An Artful Evening

We had the pleasure of hosting Mimi Casteel of Bethel Heights and Mark Vlossak of St. Innocent Winery this past Wednesday at SOHO as part of the High Museum Wine Auction week.  Executive Chef Joe Ahn created a beautiful tasting menu and each course was paired with wine from both wineries.  The result was pure art.

Miss Mimi Casteel presented wines that matched her elegance, and the wines from Mark Vlossak were as charismatic as he.  Her Estate Chardonnay and Riesling met his Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, and together with their Pinot Noirs, they proudly showcased the extraordinary wines of Willamette Valley. They shared their extensive knowledge and love of winemaking, and we all came to appreciate the art of their craftsmanship.

Chef Joe Ahn wooed diners with his deft ability to pair beautifully prepared dishes in a way that graciously showcased the wine.  He succeeded from the first course of Butter Poached Georgia White Shrimp.  The most perfectly prepared Smoked Wild King Salmon with Avocado Sauce followed, and by the time we tasted the third and fourth courses of Baby Rack of Lamb and Duck Confit designed to showcase the pinot noirs, even the vintners were dazzled by his artful presentation.

I once read a review where graceful servers were compared to butterflies, in that you’re usually happy to see them and they never impede, and I was thrilled to host an event where our staff excelled in the art of service.

Finally, the reason we were all gathered was to celebrate the High Museum of Art, known for its “steadily expanding permanent collection and innovative, exhibitions and programs.”  My husband, Frank, reminded everyone of something I said when we first met 15 years ago: Unless you support the arts, you have no right to criticize the arts.  It’s been a joy to watch the High Museum grow since I first arrived in Atlanta in the 1980’s.

This past Wednesday, it was a joy to support the arts and experience an artful evening.

At SOHO, guests will find not only food to please the palate, but artwork aimed at pleasing the eye. Recently, we've updated the art adorning the restaurant walls and the fantastic pieces each add the ambiance of the restaurant.

The contemporary portraits of Cheryl Burgess greet guests as they enter the restaurant. Her large-scale "ladies" series features works such as "Lady with Flowers" and "Lady with Hat."

Guests dining in the bar will find the work of local contemporary figurative artist Priscilla Nelson catching their eye. The majority of Nelson’s work explores textiles and clothing, and how they convey moods and attitudes. Nelson says that her early inspiration came from her love of “people watching” and studying how individuals are able to exude such varied attitudes through what they wear or don’t wear. Two of Nelson's pieces, "Golden Girl" and "Moonlight Chill", currently hang at SOHO.

Guests dining in SOHO's sunny "Pace Room" will find the art of Atlanta artist Laura Bowman and her "Angels" series. The themes of Laura's work include independence, repetition, isolation and the spiritual co-existence between nature and mankind. Laura's unique style blends texture and multi-layered compositions with monochromatic hues and carefully selected color.

Please join us at SOHO soon to soak up the atmosphere provided by wonderful local artists.
