Throughout the month of November, SOHO will showcase the wines and flavors of Australia and New Zealand. The tour begins on flight night Wednesday, November 4. The wines and tapas introduced Wednesday will be available through Tuesday, November 10.

AustraliaFirst, SOHO will pour a 2014 Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand. The winemaker offers the following tasting notes: “A musky fusion of sweet scented fruits – nectarines, peaches and nashi pears with a dash of orange zest – intermingled with a floral perfume reminiscent of star jasmine and citrus blossom. A generous palate with citrus and cassis flavors, deliciously ripe and succulent, finishing with that classic Marlborough zing.”

Next, SOHO will pour a 2014 Kim Crawford Pinot Noir from Marlborough/Central Otago, New Zealand. The winemaker describes the wine, “Smell: Rich, ripe fruit aromas of red and black berries, complemented by hints of licorice and spice, with subtle oak influences. Taste: Deliciously ripe dark cherry and blackberry flavors provide a pleasant sweetness. Silky soft tannins give structure and weight to the wine and wonderful acidity balances the sweet fruit characteristics.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a 2014 Wirra Wirra ‘Catapult’ Shiraz from McClaren Vale, Australia. The winemaker says: “Bouquet: Bright and lifted blueberry, sweet raspberry and pepper. Layers of youthful shiraz fruits are complimented by sweet spices, dry herbs and delicate florals. Palate: The palate shows stylish, medium-bodied structure while offering generous volumes of flavor and texture. A heady mix of blue fruits, damson plum, anise and peaty, savory notes is countered with bright acidity and silky, plush tannins. This elegant balance produces a long and supple palate that continues to invite another taste.”

SOHO’s executive chef, Scott Warren, and sous chef, Chris Lyons, have created a tapas plate to pair with each wine.

First, SOHO will pour a 2012 Brolio Chianti Classico DOCG. The winemaker provides the following tasting notes, “Fresh and floral bouquet with hints of quinine, violets and mimosa, followed by generous fruit sensations of blackberries, passion fruit and sweet mint leaves. Next, SOHO will pour a 2011 Tascante Ghiaia Nera. From The Wine Advocate: “From the blackened sloped of Mount Etna, the 2011 Tascante Ghiaia Nera is a pure expression of Nerello Mascalese. The Tasca family purchased precious vineyard land on Etna and began releasing a series of volcano-based wines about five years ago. This is a very successful, ruby-colored expression that is appropriate for near-term consumption. The grape’s natural tannins have been softened and the wine shows generous fruit tones, mineral shadings, leather, tobacco and exotic spice.”
