Vegetarian tapas with wine pairings? This took even us by surprise when our Chef, Joey chose the theme this week! But what a great surprise it is, as vegetarian food often gets a bad rap. There are so many new ways to create cusisine these days that it just follows that SOHO would try something new as well. And yes, we were pleasantly surprised at the delishiousness of these tapas, and even happier when we tried these amazing red wines as pairings! We think you’ll be happy too….

This week’s Flight Night begins on Wednesday, October 24th, and the wines and their tapas will be available through October 30th.

October Week 4-page-001

First, SOHO will pour a Demarie Barbera d’Alba 2016 from Alba, Piedmont DOC. The winemaker offers,

“Colour is brilliant ruby that tends to become garnet with age. Scent is an an intense fruity bouquet of prune and mulberry with a hint of spice. Flavour is full-bodied and enveloping, its slightly acid flavour does not upset the balance. Dry, fresh and fragrant, this wine lingers on the palate with traces of plum, blackberry and cherry.”

Next, SOHO will pour a Brolio Chianti Classico 2015 from Chianti Classico DOCG. The wine is described by the winemaker,

“Intense ruby red colour. Scents of small red fruit, vanilla and liquorice. The mouth shows a complex, but velvety fragrance and a long mineral aftertaste, typical of the territory.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a Lacort Tempranillo D.O.C 2014 from Rioja. Notes on the wine,

“Intense ruby red colour. Scents of small red fruit, vanilla and liquorice. The mouth shows a complex, but velvety fragrance and a long mineral aftertaste, typical of the territory.”

SOHO’s Executive Chef Joey Zelinka has created a suggested tapa plate to pair with each of the wines!

Demarie Barbera d’Alba 2016
100% Barbera
Paired with: Grilled Vegetable Terrine, Bechamel Pomodoro

Brolio Chianti Classico 2015
80% Sangiovese, 15% Merlot, 5 % Cabernet Sauvignon
Paired with: Wild Mushroom & Tagliatelle, Shaved Midnight Moon, Chianti Wine Butter

Lacort Tempranillo D.O.C 2014
80% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha
Paired with: Truffle Tremor Fried Green Tomato, Smoked Paprika-Tomato Sauce

Sample each wine in a flight (three three-ounce glasses) for $14.25. Or, pair the flight with a tapa plate for $19. Try a full glass of wine and tapa plate for $13. Of course, the wines and tapas are available individually as well ($9.50/glass and $6.50/tapas)

This week’s Flight Night begins on Wednesday, October 17th, and the wines and their tapas will be available through October 23rd.

October Week 3-page-001

First, SOHO will pour a Four Vines “The Biker” from Paso Robles. The winemaker offers,

“Dark berry and spicy notes aromas lead to a palate rich with jammy, ripe plum and blackberry flavors bolstered by a touch of black pepper and sweet, toasted oak. The 2016 offers a plush mouthfeel and a long, velvety finish.”

Next, SOHO will pour a Hyland Estate Pinot Noir 2015 from McMinnville, OR. The wine is described by the winemaker,

“Nose: Flint, Marion Berry, Cherry, Sweet and Delicate, Ocean breeze. Mouth: Coffee, leather, poignant tannins, dry forest floor, plum.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a Marietta Cellars “Armé” Cabernet 2015 from Sonoma County. Notes on the wine,

“The 2015 Armé, Marietta’s Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend, is fabulous, not to mention a tremendous value. Grilled herbs, plums, blueberry jam, spice, mint and leath-er give the 2015 its nuance and complexity. Supple and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2015 hits all the right notes. What a gorgeous wine this is.”

SOHO’s Executive Chef Joey Zelinka has created a suggested tapa plate to pair with each of the wines!

Four Vines “The Biker”
94% Zinfandel, 4% Petit Sirah, 2% Syrah
Paired with: Braised Chicken Wontons, Korean BBQ

Hyland Estate Pinot Noir 2015

beef-1In our quest to bring you unique wines and creative cuisine, the next stop on our journey this month is to pair different beautiful red wines with beef dishes! Take a look at what we’re up to, and make some time to come see us this week!

This week’s Flight Night begins on Wednesday, October 10th, and the wines and their tapas will be available through October 16th.

First, SOHO will pour a L’Arco Rosso del Veronese 2015 from Veneto, Italy. The winemaker offers,

“Sangiovese fattens up the wine and makes it both interesting and age worthy. The grape amps up the blend’s flavor profile and brings the addition of dark cherries and a teasing hint of lavender. The finish outperforms for a medium-bodied wine, hanging on amid gripping tannins. Bold fruit, a long finish, Rosso del Veronese is a seductive bottle among Fedrigo’s range.”

Next, SOHO will pour a Leviathan Red Blend 2016 from California. The wine is described by the winemaker,

“Lush yet powerful with blackberry, currant, dark chocolate and savory herbs with a dense, velvety finish on the palette.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a Beringer Knight’s Valley Cabernet 2015 from Knight’s Valley. Notes on the wine,

“Beringer’s 2015 Cabernet (Knights Valley),one of the estate’s flagships, is deep, plush and enveloping. In 2015, the Knights Valley Cabernet is quite fruity, while the more mineral and savory notes that are so typical of this appellation aren’t really present. It will be interesting to see if the 2015 develops more complexity over time. Black cherry, mocha, lavender and sweet spice build nicely as the wine opens up in the glass.”

SOHO’s Executive Chef Joey Zelinka has created a suggested tapa plate to pair with each of the wines!

L’Arco Rosso del Veronese 2015
50% Corvina/Corvinone, 30% Rondinella, 15% Sangiovese Grosso
Paired with: Prime Beef Tartare, Kalamata Olive, Goat Cheese, Piquillo Peppers

Leviathan Red Blend 2016
Cabernet, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Merlot
Paired with: Grilled Prime Sirloin, Sweet Potato, Cayenne-Honey

Beringer Knight’s Valley Cabernet 2015
87% Cabernet, 6% Merlot, 6% Cab Franc, 2% Petit Verdot
Paired with: Braised Short Rib Tacos, Onion, Beer Mustard

Sample each wine in a flight (three three-ounce glasses) for $14.25. Or, pair the flight with a tapa plate for $19. Try a full glass of wine and tapa plate for $13. Of course, the wines and tapas are available individually as well ($9.50/glass and $6.50/tapas)

lsEvery once in a while, we like to mix things up a bit, and take a few risks when it comes to Flight Night.  The common misconception with food and wine is that when you’re having seafood, you must have white wine, and when you’re having meat, then red wine, etc.

Two things that we love about our restaurant is that we have Joey Zelinka’s amazingly creative cuisine, and our Sommelier Jeff Gelfond’s brilliant affinity for wines, so we love to match the two up to surprise our guests with pairings.  In this case for October, we are going to blow your mind (so to speak) with different wines paired with a particular type of food, to illustrate this new age of food and wine pairings.  This week, we debut Wines Paired with Shrimp!

This week’s Flight Night begins on Wednesday, October 3rd, and the wines and their tapas will be available through October 9th.

First, SOHO will pour a Frog’s Leap Sauvignon Blanc 2017 from Rutherford, Napa Valley. The winemaker offers,

“The beauty of the Frog’s Leap Sauvignon Blanc over the last 38 years has been its ability to marry the classical minerality and racy acidity of a Loire Valley Sancerre with the bright, sunny aromatics that scream Napa Valley. The combination makes a unique wine that deeply satisfies.”

Next, SOHO will pour a Chateau De Saint Cosme “Les Deux Albions Blanc” 2017 from Rhone Valley, France. The wine is described by the winemaker,

“Les Deux Albions Blanc shows the salty minerality typical of limestone terroir with notes of dried apricots and white flowers. The plantings near Violès include Bourboulenc, Marsanne, Viognier, Picpoul, Clairette, and Ugni Blanc, and all varieties will be included in future bottlings.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a Decero Malbec 2015 from Mendoza, Argentina. Notes on the wine,

“Continuing the hallmark style of Malbec from Remolinos Vineyard, this wine shows intense violet aromatics, bright freshness and acidity which has come to define Decero Malbec. The 2015 Malbec being one of our lighter Malbec wines of recent years which is in harmony with its supple tannins gently integrated over 14 months in French oak barrels.”

SOHO’s Executive Chef Joey Zelinka has created a suggested tapa plate to pair with each of the wines!

Frog’s Leap Sauvignon Blanc 2017
100% Sauvignon Blanc
Paired with: Shrimp Ceviche, Cucumber, Mango, Lime

Chateau De Saint Cosme “Les Deux Albions Blanc” 2017
50% Viognier, 30% Picpoul, 20% Marsanne
Paired with: Grilled Shrimp Skewers, Smoked Pineapple Sauce

Decero Malbec 2015
100% Malbec
Paired with: Fried Shrimp, Sesame Oil, Lemon, Serrano

Sample each wine in a flight (three three-ounce glasses) for $14.25. Or, pair the flight with a tapa plate for $19. Try a full glass of wine and tapa plate for $13. Of course, the wines and tapas are available individually as well ($9.50/glass and $6.50/tapas)
