First, SOHO will pour a 2009 Marques de Grinon Caliza. The winemaker says of the Syrah/Petit Verdot blend, “Deep purple in color with ruby reflections, this wine shows alluring notes of blackberries and cassis with undertones of cinnamon and minerality. On the palate, it is beautifully full-bodied and silky with refreshing acidity and flavors that unfold into the long-lasting finish.”

Next, SOHO will pour a 2010 Palacios Remondo La Montesa Rioja. The wine is a blend of 75% Garnacha, 20% Tempranillo, 5% Mazuelo. International Wine Cellar says of the wine, “Expressive red fruit and floral scents are complemented by deeper-pitched notes of licorice and dark chocolate. Lively, open-knit cherry and black raspberry flavors show good energy and gain a smoky nuance with air. Finishes sweet and long, with supple tannins and a hint of bitter chocolate.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a 2010 Juan Gil Monastrell Jumilla. The winemaker describes, the wine, “Intense deep red cherry colour. Powerful in nose, clean and complex. Very attractive fruity aromas, touches of ripe fruit and reminds of new wood. Well-constituted in mouth, well-structured, lively and tasty, taking shape, well-balanced and very good in presence.”

SOHO’s executive chef, Scott Warren, has created three tapas plates to pair with each Spanish wine.

Next, SOHO will pour a 2010 Artadi Vinas de Gain Rioja Alavesa. This wine, 100% Tempranillo, was described by International Wine Cellar: “Assertive red fruit and floral scents are brightened by a minerally nuance. First, SOHO will pour a 2013 Bviento Aliseo Tempranillo/Petit Verdot from La Mancha, Spain. This bold red is made using organic and biodynamic farming techniques.

Next, SOHO will pour a 2012 Castillo de Monseran Garnacha from Carineña, Spain. The winemaker says of the wine, “Easy drinking, fruit driven wine. Herbal overtones, bursting ripe berry and plum fruit of the Garnacha. Soft and round on the palate, this wine has limited extraction and tannin to enhance youthful consumption. Lingering fruit flavors.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a 2011 Mas d’en Compte “Black Slate” Porrera Priorat from Catalonia, Spain. A reviewer from International Wine Cellar describes the wine,” Opaque ruby. Red currant, dried cherry, minerals and licorice on the nose. Rich and supple on entry, then more taut and linear in the mid-palate, with nicely delineated flavors of bitter cherry, cassis, dark chocolate and anise. The finish is focused, smoky and persistent, with fine-grained tannins adding grip.”

SOHO’s executive chef, Scott Warren, has created three tapas plates to pair with each Spanish wine.

First, SOHO will pour a 2013 Roman Bilbao Albarino from Riax-Bias, Spain. The wine is described as “Bright yellow with golden and greenish hues. Typical tropical fruit background of pineapple and mango. Fresh and juicy on the palate with citric notes and a long lingering finish with a nice acidity.”

Next, SOHO will pour a 2010 Navarro Lopez Gran Rojo Garnacha from La Mancha, Spain. One reviewer says of the wine, “Bright and earthy at once, a nice radish edge counters any candy tendency – it’s a direct, appealing and quite subtle wine, considerably charming. Simple, fleshy-earthy wine with terrific poise in the mouth, a nice lick of crisp-correct fruit tannin and acid.”

Finally, SOHO will pour a 2011 Vall Llach Embruix Priorat from Priorat, Spain. Of the red blend it is said, “On the nose, it is a powerful and concentrated wine of high intensity with a clear predominance of aromas of juicy very ripe red fruit, over pleasant toasted and balsamic hints and nuances of herbs from Mediterranean mountains. Mineral and spiced background. In the mouth, it follows the same pattern than in the nose: it is a powerful, concentrated and fleshy wine. Very well-structured wine, with a high tannic sensation.”

SOHO’s executive chef, Scott Warren, has created three tapas dishes to pair with each Spanish wine.

2013 Ramon Bilbao Albarino
100% Albarino
Paired with: Paella with shrimp, mussels and clams

2010 Navarro Lopez Gran Rojo Garnacha
100% Garnacha
Paired with: Manchego cheese wrapped with Serrano ham

2011 Vall Llach Embruix Priorat
Garnacha Tinta, Cariñena, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah & Merlot
Paired with: Braised lamb with wild mushrooms and charred green onions

Sample each wine in a flight (three three-ounce glasses) for $14.25. Or, pair the flight with a tapas plate for $19. Try a full glass of wine and tapas plate for $13. Of course, the wines and tapas are available individually as well ($9.50/glass and $6.50/tapas). See you soon!
